What Happens After Medicare Enrollment Ends?
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) wraps up every year on December 7. If that date has come and gone and you didn’t make changes to your plan — or if you’re wondering whether you missed your window — you’re not alone. Many Medicare beneficiaries in Monument, Colorado Springs, and the Tri-Lakes region ask this same question: what happens now?
The short answer is that you’re not completely without options. Here’s what you need to know.
You’re Locked In — But Not Forever
Once the AEP closes, your current Medicare plan remains in effect for the rest of the benefit year. You generally cannot switch Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Part D prescription drug plans until the next enrollment period opens. This is what people mean by the Medicare ‘lock-in’ period.
That said, your coverage doesn’t stop being reviewable. There are still important steps you can take right now.
Changes You Can Still Make
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31)
If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have a second opportunity each year between January 1 and March 31. During this period, you can:
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (Parts A and B)
- Add a Part D prescription drug plan if you return to Original Medicare
Note: You cannot use this period to switch from Original Medicare into a Medicare Advantage plan.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
Life doesn’t pause for enrollment windows. Certain qualifying events — like moving, losing employer coverage, or changes in your plan’s availability — may trigger a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to make changes outside of the standard timeline. We cover SEPs in detail in a separate article.
What You Should Do Right Now
Even when you can’t make plan changes, the months following enrollment are valuable preparation time. Here’s how to use them wisely:
- Review your current plan’s Summary of Benefits and Coverage — understand what’s covered and what your out-of-pocket costs look like for the year.
- Check your prescriptions — if any of your medications have moved to a higher formulary tier, document that now for planning purposes.
- Confirm your doctors are still in-network — provider networks can change at the start of each year.
- Note any gaps in coverage — use this time to talk with a licensed insurance broker about Medigap or supplemental options that may be available.
Looking Ahead: When Is the Next Enrollment Period?
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period opens again on October 15 and runs through December 7 each year. Any changes you make during that window take effect January 1 of the following year.
The best time to start reviewing your options is well before October — ideally in the summer, when plan details for the upcoming year begin to emerge. Starting early means less stress and better decisions.
